I have firm belief in the value of allowing kids the freedom to explore, build and play. As a father of 4 I’ve tried to encourage kids for the past 20 years to engage with the world outside. The prevalence of modern technology makes it perhaps all the important for kids to experience the world first hand. I hope to create a bond and natural curiosity for the world outside which will stay with them for life.
The private woodland we use is based in Tickenham. It has a large roundhouse,a number of assorted camps, climbing trees and compost toilets spread over 25 acres.
The school is run by myself (Tom Baxter) as the forest school leader. The other staff work at the Secret Garden Montessori in Nailsea and are either qualified Primary school teachers or Montessori qualified teachers. We are all DBS checked and have outdoor first aid qualifications.
The types of activities we do range is slightly age dependent but ranges across making craft from natural materials, to archery, firelighting, plant identification, camp building, poetry, team games, rope slides, tree walking (with ropes) and many many others. We also feed and engage with a coterie of different animals that are also on the site – have a look at the gallery on the side to get a flavour.
